Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Police then found multiple other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its source; investigators are currently not cognizant of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for details.
A high-ranking political figure stated the attack rendered him without words and needed to be solved promptly.
"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the right-wing attack in 2020," he posted on social media, referring to the death of nine people by a gunman targeting people of migrant background in February 2020.
