Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive black blocks raise significant concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.
But some do not, featuring prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, especially, allowed some conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they want, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Comment Remains Muted
However, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued after the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that came before the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the documents' publication.
The commentator, who not long ago secured media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of files that contained little new data.
