Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in final negotiations to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

This transaction values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5 billion in a change of corporate structure last September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old will remain as team boss and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who each also own one-third of the company.

An official representative stated: "We are providing no official statement on this. The management structure of the team stays unaltered, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in worth of the Mercedes team since Ineos bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of F1 teams recently due to the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This trend was evident with the success of the F1 movie featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at the box office.

The film represents Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports film ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are runner-up in the constructors' championship, trailing McLaren Racing, with three races remaining this season.

Their lead driver British driver George Russell has secured victory in 2 of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship after McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight straight team titles and seven drivers' titles, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
